Korrik in Albania, the Sea, the Grill, and the Long Table

When Albania is at its fullest, the Albanian table is at its most generous

Korrik smells like charcoal and sea salt. It sounds like laughter from a table that has been outside since June and shows no signs of moving back in. In Albania, July is the month the grill never cools down.

At Çka Ka Qëllu, whether you’re joining us in the Bronx, New York, Stamford, or New Jersey, July brings the spirit of the Albanian coast straight to your plate. The seafood, the vegetables, the long, unhurried meals- this is what Albanian summer tastes like. This month, we want to share it with you.

Albania in Korrik

July is peak Albania. The Albanian Riviera, stretching along the Ionian coast from Vlorë to Sarandë, is at the height of its season, the sea warm and clear, the beaches dotted with families who have been coming to the same spots for generations. The waters around Ksamil shelter octopus, sea bream, and the occasional sea turtle. The visibility in July is extraordinary, and the evenings are best spent at a table by the water, eating simply and staying late.

In the mountains, July means guesthouses with vegetables pulled straight from the garden, lamb from the hillside, and eggs from the yard. Albanian mountain cooking in summer has nothing to do with sophistication and everything to do with freshness, a philosophy our kitchen shares deeply.

An Albanian summer is not just a season. It is a smell of grilled meat in the distance and a table that never really empties.

What Albanians eat in Korrik

July is when the Albanian Mediterranean table reaches its peak. The tomatoes are at their finest, the peppers their sweetest, the eggplant most abundant. Seafood, pulled fresh from the Adriatic and Ionian each morning, is grilled simply with olive oil, lemon, and sea salt. Village salads are built from whatever came in that day. And octopus, a favorite along the Albanian coast, is grilled until tender and served alongside whatever the season offers.

There is a generosity to Albanian July cooking that goes beyond the ingredients. It is the culture of the full table, the extra chair pulled up, the plate passed around. In Albania, you do not eat alone in July.

At Çka Ka Qëllu, we bring that spirit to New York all year long, but in Korrik it feels especially close.
